Meet India's Solar Village — Su-Kam's Landmark Rural Project
Kannauj district, Uttar Pradesh
Su-Kam's most ambitious rural project put DC Solar Home Lighting Systems into villages across Uttar Pradesh, bringing 24×7 power where the grid was missing or unreliable. In Kannauj, the Samajwadi government's June 2015 solar project lit up villages like Chanduhar and Fakirpur.
A solar mini-grid powered 60 LED street lights and 450 households — plus flour mills and water pumps — changing daily life for around 2,000 residents who had lived without dependable power.
The flagship inauguration drew national dignitaries, with Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam and Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav present — a sign of how seriously India's leadership took distributed solar as a rural-development tool.
Across UP, Su-Kam's DC solar systems reached roughly 40,000 households — among the earliest megawatt-scale distributed solar deployments in India, and the centrepiece of Kunwer Sachdev's rural-electrification record.
