Every Certification Was Top-Down. Every Award Had a Story Behind the Plaque.

CE, UL, ISO, national honours, Superbrand, Marico, R&D and stage trophies — one illustrated ledger of what Su-Kam earned under my leadership, and why none of it was an afterthought.

By Kunwer Sachdev · Founder & Managing Director, 1988–2018 · Published September 30, 2026

People see plaques. I remember the months before the plaques. In any serious manufacturing organisation, certification is top-down. If the managing director does not insist, the factory will always find a reason to postpone the auditor, thin the documentation, or ship “good enough for India” while competitors chase Europe. At Su-Kam I made the opposite bet: standards first, then markets.

This page is the illustrated record — certifications that opened borders, and awards that proved quality, exports, brand, R&D and leadership. The full chronicle lives on KunwerSachdev.com. The CE door — and what I failed to walk through fast enough — is told honestly in When Su-Kam Got the CE Mark. The twelve-slide deck walk is here: Every Award Had a Form.

Why Certifications Were Never Optional

Mid-2000s Indian inverter culture was defensive: protect the home market from cheaper Chinese boxes. I wanted the reverse — put Indian engineering in front of the world’s hardest buyers. That required Conformité Européenne for Europe, UL discipline for North America, and ISO systems so an auditor could walk our floor without us inventing answers. Those marks were not stickers for brochures. They were passports. Without them you do not legally enter whole continents.

Getting each one meant process owners, test reports, product changes, and money competitors preferred to spend cutting the bill of materials. That work only happens when leadership treats the audit as non-negotiable.

CE, UL & ISO — The Global Passport

CE — Conformité Européenne, awarded August 2005 by Det Norske Veritas (DNV), Norway. First Indian company in the inverter and UPS category, as I have documented on KunwerSachdev.com. It unlocked legal sales into the EU. I told The Economic Times that CE was required to sell into EU markets — we already shipped Asia and Africa; Europe needed the mark.

UL — we pursued UL on the same principle, not because America was already our largest market, but because building to UL forced engineering discipline. CE opened Europe. UL opened North America. Together they became a global quality passport that later mattered in African distributor meetings and Gulf procurement — and even when we showed up in China as one of the few Indian inverter brands willing to compete on that factory floor.

ISO 9001 (quality) and ISO 14001 (environment) turned “we make good products” into documented systems — owners, procedures, corrective action. Press of the era recorded the ISO story as part of Su-Kam’s professionalisation.

National Award for Quality Products, 2006

National Award for Quality Products — Kunwer Sachdev receiving the trophy for Su-Kam
National Award for Quality Products — Ministry of MSME / Government of India — outstanding manufacturing of inverters.

Honoured by the Government of India for manufacturing inverters of outstanding quality — Vigyan Bhawan era, with Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh as Chief Guest, and a cash reward of Rs. One Lac. This was not a trade-fair ribbon. It was the State’s checklist: documentation, line discipline, defect data. Getting it meant our plant had to meet criteria the unorganised inverter trade never attempted.

Sectoral Export Award — Ministry of Commerce / ESC

Sectoral Export Award — Kunwer Sachdev receiving trophy for Su-Kam consumer electronics exports
Sectoral Award for highest exports in Consumer Electronics — ESC / Ministry of Commerce.

Highest exports in the consumer-electronics category (Non-SSI) under the Electronics & Computer Software Export Promotion Council. Export awards demand shipping proofs and category definitions — forms again, attachments again. A power-backup company topping that list meant we actually shipped: Africa, Middle East, South Asia — not brochure “global presence.”

Business Superbrand 2008 — And the Brand Stack That Followed

Business Superbrand — Kunwer Sachdev receiving trophy from L. K. Advani
Business Superbrand 2008 — trophy presented by Sh. L. K. Advani, New Delhi.

Superbrands status is by invitation — decided by a council of branding and media experts, not a self-nomination form. For Su-Kam it meant the market was treating a power-backup company like a serious business brand. The trophy came into my hands from Sh. L. K. Advani. Consumer Superbrand 2009 and Powerbrand India 2009–10 followed in the same trust lane.

Marico Innovation for India, 2008

Marico Innovation Foundation Innovation for India award — Su-Kam
Marico Innovation Foundation — Innovation for India. Recognition for the business model behind power backup.

Marico recognised a business-model innovation — organising a fragmented power-backup market as a reliable, cost-effective alternative to diesel-generator dependence — not a single SKU trophy. The Foundation’s winners page still lists Su-Kam for 2008: Marico Innovation Foundation — Winners 2008. Full founder account — paperwork, interview, audit, near despair: Marico Was the Toughest Award We Ever Won.

ELCINA-EFY Award for R&D Excellence

Su-Kam ELCINA-EFY Award for Excellence in Research and Development
ELCINA-EFY Award for R&D — electronics-industry recognition for a power-backup company.

A panel from government and industry selected winners from a large shortlist. For us it validated the R&D budget we protected when finance wanted cuts — patents, prototypes, Solar PCU work, the engineering that made Su-Kam look like a technology company instead of a box-mover. Later trade press still listed ELCINA-EFY when recounting the stack ( IT Voice, APN News).

Entrepreneur of the Year, 2011

Entrepreneur of the Year 2011 — leadership recognition that followed the company awards.

Company awards build the brand. Entrepreneur awards name the person who made the bets. I accepted them for Su-Kam’s sake — then pointed rooms back to engineers, dealers and export desks. Leadership is not a speech. It is a signature on documents you are willing to defend.

Brand Evenings, People Culture & Later Honours

Brand evening — certificate and trophy beyond the factory floor.

Not every photograph is a ministry seal. Some are brand evenings — rooms where Indian builders were treated as peers. Amity HR Growth Awards (2008–2010) sat in another lane: people systems that make audits and service culture possible. Asia’s Most Promising Brand 2012–13 (WCRC, with KPMG India as process advisors), National Quality Excellence Award 2014 (Most Innovative Company in power backup), and Hurun’s Most Respected Entrepreneurs 2017 extended the ledger into the solar decade. Indira Super Achievers (2007) and earlier Bharat Shiromani (1993) sit at the personal-honour edges of the same journey — documented on KunwerSachdev.com.

FAQ

What certifications did Su-Kam earn under Kunwer Sachdev?

CE (EU) from Det Norske Veritas in August 2005 — first Indian inverter/UPS company in that category — plus UL for the US and Canada, ISO 9001 quality management, and ISO 14001 environmental management. They were pursued so Su-Kam could export as a standards-led manufacturer, not only a domestic inverter brand.

Why does Kunwer Sachdev call certifications top-down?

Factory audits, process owners, test reports and product redesigns do not happen if the MD treats certification as a quality-department afterthought. At Su-Kam the mandate came from the top — then the organisation had to become auditable.

Which major awards did Su-Kam win under Kunwer Sachdev?

National Award for Quality Products (Govt. of India), Sectoral Export Award (Ministry of Commerce / ESC), Business Superbrand 2008, Marico Innovation for India 2008, Consumer Superbrand and Powerbrand, ELCINA-EFY R&D, ISA Technovation 2011, Entrepreneur of the Year 2011, Amity HR Growth Awards, Asia’s Most Promising Brand, and later Hurun recognition — among others.

Was Su-Kam the first Indian inverter company with CE mark?

Yes, in Kunwer Sachdev’s documented founder account: August 2005, CE by DNV Norway — first in the Indian inverter and UPS category. The Economic Times quoted him on EU market access; the full CE story is on KunwerSachdev.com.

Which Su-Kam award was the hardest to win?

In Kunwer’s founder account, Marico Innovation for India 2008 was the toughest — heavy paperwork, personal interview, and a full audit of the work. The deep essay is on SolarManOfIndia: Marico Was the Toughest Award We Ever Won.

Is Business Superbrand an applied-for award?

No. Superbrands status is by invitation and council decision — not a self-nomination form. Su-Kam’s Business Superbrand 2008 trophy was presented by Sh. L. K. Advani; Consumer Superbrand 2009 and Powerbrand India followed in the brand-trust lane.

Where is the complete awards chronicle?

KunwerSachdev.com holds the 1993–2019 chronicle. The original 12-slide deck is on SlideShare. SolarManOfIndia has this illustrated certifications-and-awards hub, the Marico 2008 founder essay, a slide-by-slide awards presentation walkthrough, and the ISA Technovation founder essay.
