I Took the Land and Built Afresh — Factory by Factory for Twelve Years.

2000 — first factory in Gurgaon. Land taken. Built afresh. Then unit after unit for about twelve years — R&D, HQ, Baddi inverter, battery, transformer, Katha.

Gurgaon HQ — one of the units I designed and built from scratch on land we took, not a rented shell.

Not Bought. Built.

I did not inherit a campus. I did not buy a finished plant and put a sticker on the gate. I took the land and built afresh — drawings, approvals, contractors, interiors — factory by factory, for about twelve years of my prime time. That is the industrial truth behind Su-Kam’s manufacturing story under my watch as Founder & MD.

The Factories chapter says it plainly: brick by brick, hands on the drawings, standing in front of every unit. This post walks those units with pictures — Gurgaon first, then the conversion into R&D with production on the ground floor, then Baddi and the dream battery plant — and puts the media links beside the scrapbook.

Unit 1 — Gurgaon, 2000: The First Factory

Year 2000. First factory in Gurgaon. That is where the manufacturing line of Su-Kam’s scale story begins — not as a brochure claim, but as a plot of land that had to become a working plant. After 2000 I put up factory after factory: two units and an R&D building on land I took in Gurgaon, then more in Baddi.

Same Gurgaon Shell — Later R&D, Factory on the Ground Floor

That first Gurgaon factory did not stay frozen as “only production.” It was later converted so R&D lived in the building while manufacturing stayed on the ground floor. Engineers upstairs / in the lab spaces. Boxes still moving on the floor below. One land parcel. Two jobs. That is how we compressed a technology company into the same walls we had raised from scratch.

Head-office / work floor — the Gurgaon campus grew from the first plant into HO, R&D and production sharing the same industrial DNA.

When Swissnex’s Solartech delegates came in January 2018, the itinerary was deliberate: Gurugram HO, R&D, then the road to Baddi. Guests were meant to see design, testing and production as one company — not a conference-room slide. The same R&D engine room is in the archived Su-Kam blog “A glimpse of R&D” and on this site’s library R&D entry.

Unit — World-Class HQ on a 1,000 m² Gurgaon Plot

The office I was proudest of: a corporate headquarters on a 1,000-square-metre plot in Gurgaon, about two and a half years in the making, seating more than 150, grand reception, canteen feeding a hundred. Same rule as the factories — take the land, build afresh — prove an Indian power-electronics company could look like anything abroad.

Baddi Units — Inverter, Battery, Transformer

Then Himachal. Four more plants in Baddi in the story record: inverter plant, battery plant, transformer plant — built one by one on industrial land, not rented glory. Dealers later walked those floors for #DealerEducation; Swissnex walked them for soft power; NISE students walked manufacturing and R&D in November 2017. The Corporate Focus Keynote kept Baddi front and internal frames in the scrapbook. The public media record is thicker than the scrapbook alone: the old Su-Kam blog’s Baddi facility post (Jan 2012), YouTube tours of the inverter plant and battery plant, and Electronics For You’s manufacturing-floor profile naming how we built and designed in India. Katha — The Six-Acre SMF Battery Dream Plant

Separate chapter inside the same industrial ambition: the sealed maintenance-free battery plant on six acres at Katha, built with Reliance–Temasek era capital — training hall, drawings I checked, years of construction. It was inaugurated by Himachal Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal with great fanfare — one of the finest manufacturing facilities we had raised from empty land. It was my dream factory. It was also my costliest product lesson. Both truths stay on the record in the Factories chapter and on KunwerSachdev.com.

Quality Lab & Utilities — The Invisible Units

A factory is not only the assembly hall. Spectro quality labs, utilities, effluent treatment — those rooms were part of the same twelve-year build. Without them, CE/UL/ISO paperwork and export awards would have been empty forms. That paperwork sits in the awards deck blog and the Corporate Focus press scrapbook.

What I Want on Record

Kunwer Sachdev — Founder & MD of Su-Kam. 2000: first factory in Gurgaon — land taken, built afresh. Later: same campus logic — R&D with manufacturing on the ground floor. Then about twelve years of unit-by-unit construction — Gurgaon HQ, Baddi inverter / battery / transformer, Katha SMF dream plant inaugurated by Himachal Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal. FAQ

When did Kunwer Sachdev start building Su-Kam factories?

In 2000 he started with the first factory in Gurgaon — taking land and building afresh, not buying a ready shell. That first unit was later converted so R&D sat in the building with manufacturing still on the ground floor. Over about twelve years he added more plants one by one.

Which factory units did Su-Kam build under Kunwer Sachdev?

Gurgaon: first factory (later R&D + ground-floor production), additional Gurgaon units, and a world-class corporate headquarters. Baddi, Himachal Pradesh: inverter, battery and transformer plants, plus the large SMF battery plant at Katha — inaugurated by Himachal Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal. The Corporate Focus Keynote, story photos, and Su-Kam Solar YouTube plant tours carry the record.

Did Su-Kam rent or inherit these plants?

No. The founder account is explicit: land was taken and factories and the HQ were built from scratch — drawings, approvals, construction — unit by unit over roughly twelve years of his prime time.

Where else is this factories story documented?

On this site’s story chapter The Factories; on KunwerSachdev.com’s empire / six-factories essay; the Su-Kam Solar YouTube channel (Corporate Video 2015, inverter plant, battery plant tours); the archived Su-Kam blog Baddi / R&D posts (Wayback); Electronics For You’s manufacturing-floor profile; and companion posts such as Swissnex and NISE factory visits.

Is this a Facebook-archive blog?

No. Primary visuals come from the Su-Kam Corporate Focus Keynote (Baddi front/internal) and the founder story archive photos of each unit. YouTube plant tours, Wayback Su-Kam blog pages, and Facebook-era dealer / NISE visits are linked as related media.
